A Chinese humanoid robot has made headlines around the world after running 100 metres faster than the fastest human in history.

The robot, named Tiangong Ultra, completed the distance in just 8.64 seconds at the World Humanoid Robot Games in Beijing. Usain Bolt’s famous 100-metre world record stands at 9.58 seconds, set in 2009.

Tiangong Ultra was developed by the Beijing Humanoid Robot Innovation Center. Its performance is being seen as an important milestone for humanoid robotics, a field that is developing rapidly in China and around the world. The robot had already shown impressive speed earlier in the competition, recording 9.39 seconds in its opening heat and 8.86 seconds in the semifinal before improving again in the final.

What makes the achievement particularly interesting is that running on two legs is not an easy task for a machine. A humanoid robot has to constantly control its balance, coordinate its joints and adjust its movement while moving at high speed. Tiangong Ultra uses advanced motion-control systems that allow it to run without an operator controlling every individual step. Engineers tested several running strategies in simulations and then refined them through repeated real-world trials.

However, the robot’s record also shows that speed is only one part of the challenge. After completing its run, Tiangong Ultra struggled to slow down and crashed into the safety barrier. Engineers say braking, stability and the ability to adapt to unexpected situations remain important areas for improvement.

The development of Tiangong Ultra is not only about breaking sports records. Researchers hope that advances in humanoid movement can eventually help robots perform useful tasks in factories, warehouses, commercial services and even emergency situations. The smaller Omni model developed by the same team has already been tested in a building-climbing exercise, showing how the technology could move beyond the race track.

The achievement does not mean robots have suddenly become better than humans at everything. Bolt’s record is a measure of human athletic performance, while Tiangong Ultra was designed around mechanical speed and computer-controlled movement. Still, the result offers a fascinating glimpse into how quickly robotics is advancing.
